Little League Day. 73 degrees. Mild Breeze. 32,282 in attendance. Many, including myself, are nervous about facing Felix Hernandez. What ensues requires that you make up your own mind about whatever the play of the game is. Just note: This game went 10 innings and in the middle of the 9th they announced Rickie Weeks as the Honda Player of the Game. You decide: Who is really the player of the game?

Is it just me? Or does today feel different? The post full-moon drivers do the goofiest things today--yet they're not annoying this morning. The sun is in your eyes as you drive to work and you barely notice; it makes you feel more like you're in your favorite seat squinting into the sun.
You look at the freeway signs and it dawns on you haw beautiful they are: Green, white, and the exit-only gold. They're perfect. you scan left and watch people zoom by in the carpool lane and starting chanting "Z, Z, Z!" You're happy today--just plain happy--because you're with your people; crowded shoulder-to-shoulder, fender-to-fender, bumper-to-bumper. Those that ignore the "do not cross the double line" sign don'e bother you for once because you dream of doubles, ninety feet + ninety feet. People are hugging your bumper tight, and you think they must be an A's fan getting a closer look at the license plate: A's BBL. And it's Monday and you feel good. Excited that the traffic allows you time to quiz yourself on the most important math: 77. 31. 3. Yep, you've got the names memorized; you've got this. It doesn't matter that it's a five-day work week because every evening you have plans. So you smile, take a deep breath, cough a little because of your allergies, but keep smiling...satisfied and light afoot. Yes, it feels differently today. You flip up your green collar, imagine a few hours from now, and lip-sync with your favorite imaginary Blue's exclamation, "Play Ball!" Anything is possible today. Anything. |
